Who knows if we'd be able to party as freely as we can today if the Beastie Boys hadn't come along and told us to fight for it? Emerging out of New York City's hardcore punk scene in the early '80s, Adam "MCA" Yauch, Mike "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz forever changed the pop landscape by fusing hip-hop with punk, bringing the world its first chart-topping rap album in the process. In actuality, they were three of the most innovative, audacious and brilliant musicians of the past three decades and everyone who ever incorporated hip-hop into rock or used sampling in a song is indebted to them – regardless of race, genre or level of self-referential brattiness. After cancer unfairly stole Yauch from us in 2012 at the age of 47, the Beastie Boys' catalog will now forever consist of just eight albums released between 1986 and 2011 - each of which we rank below.
Several early CD reissues did little justice to the album; the Captain Oi release, however, is essential, not only for the mastering and packaging, but also for eight bonus tracks that include the first stirrings of the aforementioned Yobs, a pair of non-album B-sides, and two songs ("Lonely Schooldays" and "Take a Heart") that have never previously. seen the light of day, but slide straight into the soul of the album regardless.
Anne-Marie narrates her experience warding off unwanted romantic advances from a friend, repeatedly telling this person that they’re nothing more than F-R-I-E-N-D-S. The song marks the first collaboration between Marshmello and Anne-Marie. The music video, which racked up over 40,000,000 views in a month, was released exactly one week prior to the song’s official release. In the video, Anne-Marie is seen at a sleepover with female friends, not conversing with any males, making it very clear that she’s not looking for a partner. Hence, it’s probably a stylistic choice of the writers. One possible explanation is that even though Anne-Marie gets increasingly annoyed with the person she’s addressing, the actual topic is happy and child-friendly (represented best by the artwork). Written By Anne-Marie, Marshmello, Richard Boardman & 5 more.
