Side two is the soul of the album, a kind of psychological equivalent of Lola vs. Powerman that delves deep into a matter close to David’s heart: What’s it all about to be a rock & roll star? It begins with the slow, fluid Lady Stardust, a song in which currents of frustration and triumph merge in an overriding desolation. David Bowie has pulled off his complex task with consummate style, with some great rock & roll (the Spiders are Mick Ronson on guitar and piano, Mick Woodmansey on drums and Trevor Bolder on bass; they’re good), with all the wit and passion required to give it sufficient dimension and with a deep sense of humanity that regularly emerges from behind.
Quirky and often highly clever, Space had one of the most appealing alternative rock releases of 1996 in Spiders - which grossed some listeners out with a cover depicting tarantulas. This eccentric, risk-taking band (not to be confused with the late-'70s disco group Space) doesn't take itself too seriously, and brings an enjoyably twisted sense of humor to such goofy numbers as "Female of the Species" (an ode to a lover who practices witchcraft), "Mr. Psycho," and "Voodoo Roller.
Spiders is the debut album by English band Space, released on 16 September 1996. After signing to independent label Gut Records, the band recorded Spiders between 1995 and 1996 in Liverpool. The album combines a great wealth of styles and genres, including rock, hip hop, techno, funk and rave. This was as a result of the different musical tastes of the band members. The band's first single, "If It's Real" (1993), was released on Hug Records, belonging to the band's long-time supporter Mark Cowley, with artwork designed by Carl Hunter of The Farm. Successful indie label Gut Records payed attention to the band as they had started initiated a sub-label that was also named Hug Records, asking Cowley for permission.
