Album opener Life is Life  sounds like a cross between Flaming Lips and Mike and the Mechanics, but don’t let the latter name put you off as it’s a lot less cheesy. The second song on the album Tonight’s the kind of night  has a similar piano melody in the chorus to the famous one in Baba O’ Riley  by The Who, and is a nice number, that has a similar repetitive sound that’s been made famous in the alternative genre by Arcade Fire. Chris Loveridge’s track ‘Girl’ is the best song I’ve heard this year if you are looking for angst and lament, but ‘The Last Night On Earth’ cuts it pretty close and might leave some of Noah & The Whale’s old audience behind, but the band appears to be headed in the right direction.
In fact, Noah and the Whale's sophomore album, The First Days of Spring, deliberately turned away from that sort of thing, opting instead for a glummer, stripped, and slowed-down acoustic sound. If both these albums relied on a certain hand-crafted feel to derive their small charms, new album Last Night on Earth projects flaws and all onto slicker, seemingly bigger-budget productions.
Last Night on Earth is a mixture of upbeat pop tunes ( Tonight’s the Kind of Night, Give It All Back ), inspiring anthems (catchily enunciated single . N ), and tranquil, casual melodies ( Wild Thing, Old Joy ) that all tell the story of what may be glimpses of your own last night on Earth. In 2009, Noah and the Whale released their sophomore album, The First Days Of Spring. To call it a maudlin album would be understating things. At least on their debut,Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down, songs like Five Years Time were wearing a smile on the outside, all sing-song dewy choruses and love-sickness.

The third album by these posh indie-folkers may be one huge conceptual prank. It may be completely sincere. Either way, it's completely appalling. Having ditched the lo-fi stylings of their previous two releases, the Twickenham band have thrown themselves headlong into the pseudo-soulful blandness of late Eighties soft rock like some horrific Frankenstein hybrid of Deacon Blue, John "Cougar" Mellencamp and Hothouse Flowers. Even if it's a joke, it's a joke you don't wanna hear. More about Indie Music Noah And The Whale Soft Rock Twickenham.

It's all change on Noah & the Whale's third album. Frontman Charlie Fink has put heartbreak behind him and there's even a hint of optimism. March 6 2011, 12:01am, The Sunday Times. Shaking off perceptions: Noah and the Whale are showing a different side on their new track (PR). They were first bracketed as purveyors of alternately fey or morbid nu-folk; on their second album, Noah & the Whale’s front man, Charlie Fink, made one of the most devastating break-up records of all time, following the demise of his relationship with Laura Marling
