From "Together at the Bluebird Cafe" (2001) with Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle.

Clark and Van Zandt were best friends for many years until Van Zandt's death in 1997, and Clark has included a Van Zandt composition on most of his albums. In 1995, he recorded a live album with Van Zandt and Steve Earle, Together at the Bluebird Cafe, which was released in October 2001. Other live material can be found on his album Keepers. In 2006, Clark released Workbench Songs. The album was nominated for "Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album" at the Grammy Awards. He also toured with Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely, and John Hiatt in 2004, 2005 and 2007.

Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark - Together At The Bluebird Café. These three genuine, long-time friends support and feed off each other in a unique live performance at the Bluebird. Each takes a turn with an introduction to and selection of their best stuff from that time. I particularly liked Townes' introductions and the story of The Interfaith Dental Clinic.

Together at the Bluebird Café. Together at the Bluebird Café is a live recording of an "in-the-round" concert by three critically acclaimed Texan singer-songwriters, Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. Each alternates between solo performances. The album demonstrates the camaraderie between the three artists whose personal lives and musical careers are very much intertwined.

Together at the Bluebird Café (American Originals) For fans of Texas singer-songwriters, this live recording is a major find. A benefit show held in 1995 at Nashville's shrine for songs, the tiny Bluebird Cafe (capacity 60, tops) rounded up Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, and Guy Clark for a night of wild stories, bad jokes, and songs about truth. Moment's like Clark's exquisite "Randall Knife," Earle's "My Old Friend the Blues," and Van Zandt's story about his losing a gold tooth gambling (the Interfaith Dental Clinic was the beneficiary of the night) are worth the cover charge. Not essential by any means, but you'll still wish you'd had that table near the front.

Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt & Guy Clark. The concert took place 15 months before Van Zandt's death. Just as in his Live at the Old Quarter 22 years earlier, Van Zandt's humor, wedged between some very sad songs is a prominent feature. The stripped down versions of Earle's songs are also unusual. Earle's own live performances and albums rarely offer the listener so many chances to hear his music without the backing of a full band. Clark spends the least time talking between songs, allowing his songs to tell their own stories

Yet Van Zandt ups the ante with his lullaby to his daughter "Katie Belle", complete with a hilarious introduction, that was so typical of one of his performances. When Van Zandt sings, "there is no deeper blue, in the ocean that lies/as deep as the blue, of your laughing eyes", you cannot help but be transported by a father's love for his child. There's even a surprise guest singing harmony, first with Clark and later with Earle, toward the end of the performance, which makes the night seem all the more special (it would be a spoiler to mention her identity for those sitting on their porches, listening to this properly). Like great art, these songs don't need analytical dissection to be appreciated, just be grateful this remarkable evening of friendship and music was captured for posterity. guy clark steve earle and townes van zandt together at the bluebird café
